Artist Statement - Melissa Manivong - June 2015 The major idea of my painting is to show how construction can be eco-friendly. This is conveyed through the trees gradually growing into buildings. Looking at pictures of trees and buildings online was what inspired me to paint this. I noticed that both trees and buildings are similar; both trees and buildings are a large structure that cannot be moved once it has been placed somewhere, they both can be a representation of something important such as The Empire State Building, which is one of the tallest buildings made by man. But the tallest tree in the world is the coast redwood. After realizing both trees and buildings are similar, I decided to put the two together to create a tree building.   Since my concept was a tree that gradually grows into a building, I wanted everything to be as simplistic as possible. Therefore I did not want to add anything else that would draw people's attention away from the buildings. The way I planned on keeping my painting, simple is by only having the tree/buildings go around the whole helmet, without anything else. So it would stand out against the sky. In my opinion, having the trees and buildings going around the helmet without anything else draws more attention to all the details instead of having something that looks chaotic.   The medium I used was acrylic paint in the colours red, blue, and yellow. These colours were mixed together to create the brown for the trees, the grey for the buildings and the dirt. First, I began to paint all the roots going around the helmet then mixed in some yellow paint to create a lighter shade of brown for the trees, then mixed in the blue and some red to create the grey that was used for the buildings. After the trees and buildings were done, I used some silver paint to make the windows which fades away as it gets closer to the tree and the dirt. This represents the tree tuming into the building as it grows taller. What I have learned from this was that the less paint the better for the final product. By having a small amount of paint, on the brush it gives me more control over the medium which makes it easier to use.   The idea of a tree growing into a building relates to me because, it was a creation from my imagination; and it also shows people that construction does not have to be harmful to the environment. Even though the final product is not the best it will attract the attention of people when they look at it. My painting is not only about the trees that gradually turn into buildings, it also has a sky with multiple colours that makes it looks like the sun is setting behind the buildings. I hope to go to George Brown College to become a chef.
