This is a very old style muffler for a stationery engine, such as a small hit and miss engine or a Briggs & Stratton or similar. I do not know the actual application. The thread opening looks to be 3/4" pipe thread.

Here is a new Gast Vacuum Intake Filter Assembly for the model 1023 Gast pumps I sell here on Ebay. It is made by Gast for your pump. The use of this filter can prolong the life of the vanes in your pump.
This is an original NOS, new and unused and in the original box, muffler for a vintage Clinton engine such as used on a go cart, mini-bike, or lawn mower. A part number of 4500 is stamped on the box. I do not know the year of this part, likely around the 1950s, but there is a price of $1.20 hand written on the box.
