Brother and Smith Corona were slugging it out for typewriter market share in the 1980s and 1990s until computer-connected printers practically wiped out stand-alone typewriter sales in the USA. Brother still makes and sells typewriters very similar to this one, essentially the same mechanism and using same supplies, just different styling. Both brands made excellent, rugged electronic typewriters.

This is a full-featured manual portable typewriter from the 1960s. It has minor scrapes and marks (from Wite-Out!) but no damage. Note the perfect-condition plastic release levers on both ends of the carriage; this was a weak point with Smith Coronas as these frequently broke with rough use.

Sears carried many brands of typewriters until the 1950s or 1960s, when they starting selling many models of "Tower" then "Sears" re-branded and slightly re-designed Smith Corona models. As with their cameras, eventually they had products made for them by other manufacturers. This 1968 model had pretty much all the features you could find on a portable typewriter.

Heavy duty "portable" electronic typewriter made in Japan for Sears. More suitable for permanent location in an office than lugging around, as it is every bit as heavy as the "regular" electric typewriters just preceding the electronic ones. A VERY nice looking machine.

The Nakajima name is not a household word in the USA, but they made many models of their typewriters and other equipment under the Sears, IBM, Adler, and other names, at their factory in Japan and then in USA. This is a very full-featured model. BUT it works quite well as a plain-vanilla typewriter.
