Best chickens ever! Icelandic chickens are a landrace breed that originated with the settlement of Iceland by Vikings during the ninth century. For more than 1,000 years these birds were the only chickens in Iceland. They were selectively chosen for self sufficency and good mothering skills.  In the 1930s the Icelandics were in danger of being lost when Iceland imported strains of leghorns to boost commercial egg production, and the Icies were crossed with them. In the 1970s efforts to conserve the Icelandics began by first preserving isolated flocks and also exporting these genetically unique birds into other countries including the US. They are still very rare here. According to a 2004 study of Icelandic blood samples, 78% of their DNA is completely unique from any other chicken. My chickens are third generation from David Grotte at Whipporwill Farm and thus should have diverse genetics from all four of the recognized lines. I have been so amazed by these energetic, hardy and multicolored chickens. These are a landrace breed, so each one is different in plumage, pattern and even combs. They have both single and rose combs. They are a smaller chicken with cocks averaging 4 1\2 -5lb and hens 3-3 1\2lb. But they lay so good!! Their eggs are creamy white and medium size. My egg percentage is ranging from 83-94% eggs to chickens. My chickens are raised as non GMO and I pasture and free range them. They regularly get lacto fermented grains, kelp and raw apple cider vinegar as supplements. They are eating just a shade more than half what a average light weight chicken eats in feed. (About 40% less than many standard breeds) They are a very low maintenance crowd, no illness or problems. They are extremly busy foragers, ranging anywhere and everywhere. You won't find a more self sufficient chicken. They are also extremely curious and smart. You may be dubious as to a smart chicken, but if all you've ever had were the standard dumb clucks then the Icelandics will amaze you. If I change anything about their coop or range they are immediately on top of it to figure out what it is and if it is edible. Did I mention they fly? It seems flying and running are their two speeds. My mom, who has raised chickens for a long time, says she has never seen better chickens than these.  Icelandics have a very high fertility\hatchability rate and all the eggs we have used have been fertile. That aside, I can't guarantee the eggs I send you will hatch. I can only guarantee that I will do my absolute best to package them safely and securely and to send you the freshest eggs available, still warm if possible, no older than one day. 12 +(I always try to send extra if they're available.) I ship only Mon. thru Wed. so they won't sit in the post office. Please leave your feedback based on my packing, not on your hatch results, as I have no control over your incubation practice, the post office, or weather. Also, should there be an issue with damages incurred during shipping, you will need the package to show the post office to collect insurance.  I have been blessed owning these birds. Try them and I hope you will be too.
