Scintillation detector kit for sale! This listing is for a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector kit containing one modified Bicron 1600-2265 model 1.12X1.12M3/1.12L (used), and a sound card spectroscopy driver (brand new Gamma spectacular GS1100A, with warranty). All you need to do is connect the detector to the GS1100A, the driver output to your computer microphone input, and finally provide 5V power to the GS1100A from a USB port. Then you are ready to do gamma spectrometry! If you have been browsing Ebay for detectors, you have probably stumbled upon these square Bicron detectors before, so what is different with this one? The original voltage divider of the detector is not designed for single use of the detector as a gamma spectrometer; these detectors come from portal monitors where many detectors are connected together in an array. As a result, the energy response of the detector is quite non-linear, to the point where the spectra is strangely compressed and calibration becomes tricky. This has been resolved by modifying the voltage divider to yield a nice linear response. The detcor runs fine at 800-900V, and comes with a BNC connector for quick connection to the GS1100A, or other devices should you want to. The resolution of the Bicron probe is moderate at 10%, but as the sample spectra show, the unique isotope characteristics of Ra226 and Th232 are clearly visible. As the detector has a 3" thick crystal, it is sensitive also to higher energies such as the 2614 keV of the Th232 decay chain (see figure). Using a reference soil sample and the free software BeqMoni, it is even possible to obtain Bq/kg values, as shown in one of the figures where a soil sample from a Chernobyl-contaminated area in Sweden was analyzed, and the Cs137 activity quantified. You can choose between three completely free softwares to use for your gamma spectrometry; BeqMoni, PRA and Theremino! For optimal results I recommend some kind of lead shielding around the detector, and a sound card of good quality capable of samplingat 96 kHz. Internal sound cards can be noisy, so an external USB sound card can be a good idea (I've had excellent results with a Creative X-Fi Go!).As the Bicron detector is used, I can't offer any warranty, but I can guarantee that it will work upon arrival. The GS1100A is brand new, and covered under warranty, but is essentially indestructible if used as intended. The Gamma Spectacular website also offers extensive support for their products, and about radiation detection in general through its open forum where enthusiasts share their experiences. You also have the choice of three free softwares to use for generating your spectra; PRA, BeqMoni or Theremino! If you want to get your feet wet in the world of gamma spectrometry, this kit is a great starting point without digging a hole in your wallet. You also buy something that will work right out of the box, so no "have no possibility to test" which so common with these devices. Also, if you later feel you outgrow the capabilites of this detector you can easily use any other scintillation (or GM) detector with a BNC detector running at +600 to +1100 V! Any and all questions are most welcome! Disclaimer: The kit is intended for hobby use only. If you are genuinely worried about radiation levels in your home, food, soil etc, contact your local radiation safety authority for advice and information.
