LAST CHANCE! Make an offer and take this $100k plus sensor home for less than a grand delivered! FREE SHIPPING in the USA! Ok, now here is what i call a RARE as it gets mad-sci surplus item! It is an intact crossing fiber neutron imaging detector module, the unit these were pulled from also used four of those insanely sensitive LND tubes for gross detection of low energy and thermal neutrons as well. (see my other auctions) The unit has 64 of the green scintillating fiber (proton recoil) fast neutron detectors and a *lot* (several hundreds) of undoped cesium iodide gamma detection crystals under the fibers. It was made to be mounted on an aircraft for searching for loose nukes. How it works is when a particle hits the scintillator fiber it triggers a fast light pulse delivered to an APD or multichannel PMT for registration. If the particle is a SNM neutron, it passes with a 99+ percent probability of missing anything optically active, and if it does hit something in the gamma sensing CsI crystal it likely will not have enough energy to make a significant flash of light. If a cosmic ray or cosmogenic neutron hits the fiber it will still cause a registration flash, but at the same time it will have so much energy as to cause a cascade of quantum particles and gamma rays that WILL register on the CsI crystals. This allows the unit to tell if it is a neutron or a cosmic particle, as well a differentiate between naturally occurring uber-high energy neutrons, and neutrons from plutonium or other nasty SNM's. This item may also be of use in reverse mode for cosmic ray studies. As you may have guessed the fibers and rough CSI crystals came from one of these modules that was parted out. This unit is intact and will remain so! Since it is so cool and useful for research as it is, i have left it whole to give someone a chance at it as a high value research component. Similar, although larger detectors are used in the detector array at CERN. Parts value alone is well into the thousands of dollars even at bargain basement EBAY prices!  For example, the PMT tubes go for about $50 each (12 of them in it) and work well in Ludlum and Eberline geiger counters, the fibers go for about $15 each in a 12 inch length (it has 64 of these x2), the VERY nice negative bias adjustable HV power supply module is worth about $100 at the least, and the cesium iodide crystals go for about 15 each (the module has a several HUNDRED of them in 3 discrete module packs). These are current ebay selling prices, I really do not want to know what these cost new. I have lots of other nuclear related items, lasers and other unique stuff for sale this week.
