This is the fourth book in Edgar Browning’s series of photos from state transportation archives showing the construction of roads and highways. Featured in this book are segments on the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway (Interstate 395 and part of I-95), and the Colonial Parkway (which links Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown), and the Hampton Roads Tunnel. A wide variety of work is depicted, and equipment shown in the excellent photographs ranges from the ordinary to the very unusual. The book begin with 1930 construction of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. Equipment of all sizes was used by both local contractors and those from "away" as the jobs progressed.
