Roadbuilding Construction Equipment at Work In the State of Virginia: A pictorial history of highway and parkway construction in the State of Virginia, by Edgar Browning, published by Edgar Browning, 2013. 8 1/2 x 11 paperback, 142 pages. ISBN 978-0-578-12826-9 Please note this book is new, not used. This is the fourth book in Edgar Browning’s series of photos from state transportation archives showing the construction of roads and highways. Featured in this book are segments on the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway (Interstate 395 and part of I-95), and the Colonial Parkway (which links Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown), and the Hampton Roads Tunnel. A wide variety of work is depicted, and equipment shown in the excellent photographs ranges from the ordinary to the very unusual. The book begin with 1930 construction of the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. Equipment of all sizes was used by both local contractors and those from "away" as the jobs progressed. Contractors featured include: Roberts Paving Co. (Salisbury, Md.); McDougald Construction Co. (Atlanta, Ga.); Merritt Chapman & Scott (Baltimore and New York City); W.W. Tuck Co. (Virgilina, Va.); Nello L. Teer (Durham, NC); Robertson-Henry Co. (Huntington, WV); Rea Construction Co. (Charlotte, NC); A.B. Burton; Albert Brothers; Ames & Webb; B.G. Young & Sons; Diamond Construction Co.; English Construction Co.; Harris & Brooks; Hawkins Construction Co.; McLean Contracting; Oman Construction Co.; Tidewater Construction Co.; Vecellio & Grogan, and many others. Equipment featured includes everything from very large shovels, to converted army artillery tractors, to dozers of all sizes. This is a book any antique truck or equipment enthusiast will want to have.
