Roadbuilding Construction Equipment at Work in the State of Ohio, by Edgar Browning, published by Edgar Browning, 2014. 8 1/2 x 11 paperback, 168 pages. ISBN 978-0-578-14078-0 Please note this book is new, not used. This is the fifth pictorial history of road building Edgar Browning has compiled from the archives of state transportation departments, construction companies, and other sources. Thirty seven pages are devoted to the construction of the Ohio Turnpike, which began in 1954. This section covers most of the many In-State and Out-of-State contractors who worked contracts on that massive undertaking. Pictures show equipment and activity by Ohio firms like V. N. Holderman and Peirce, as well as major out-of-state construction companies like Harrison Construction, J. A. Jones, and Western Contracting The rest of the book covers the construction of the original Interstate Highways, as well as primary and secondary road construction in the State of Ohio. Forty road building contractors, the majority based in Ohio, are featured: A. J. Baltes American Construction Brewer & Brewer Bruns Coal Nick Cenci Chapin & Chapin DeSalvo Construction Dienst & Son Edgington & Son Fischer Construction Foley Construction General Asphalt & Paving G reat Lakes Construction S. J. Groves & Sons Harrison Construction Holderman & Sons H. W. Holt & Son Horvitz Company S. E. Johnson W. L. Johnson J. A. Jones Kiewit Langenderfer Lombardo Bros Mashuda McCarren Olyer Bros Osborne Peirce Construction Rardin Replogle Company Ringwald & Sons Scully Bros Shelly & Sands Smalley & Sons Turpin Company Union Building & Construction Visintine Company Vogt Paving Company Winkleman Company The well captioned images largely span the late 1930s through the 1960s. Some of the most interesting photos and discussion involve the saga of one innovative contractor repowering Caterpillar DB tractors to create one of a kind "Tom Cats" and "Bearcats". A great deal of the manufacturing base for construction equipment was located in Ohio during this period and the photos depict much of that machinery. Equipment featured includes everything from very large shovels, to converted army artillery tractors, to dozers of all sizes. This is a book any antique truck or equipment enthusiast will want to have. Equipment pictures includes makers Bucyrus-Erie; Caterpillar; CMI Autograde; Euclid; Insley; Koehring; LeTourneau; Marion; Michigan; Northwest; Ransome; and others.
