Roadbuilding Construction Equipment at Work: Pennsylvania Turnpike Edition, by Edgar Browning, published by Edgar Browning, 2014. 8 1/2 x 11 paperback, 168 pages. ISBN 978-0-578-15267-7 Please note this book is new, not used. This is the sixth pictorial history of road building Edgar Browning has compiled from the archives of state transportation departments, construction companies, and other sources. Unlike his previous books, this one deals solely with one project: the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2015. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is known as Amierca’s first superhighway, and parts of it were constructed along the railroad route designated by William Vanderbilt and Andrew Carnegie in the 1880s. The Turnpike Commission was formed in 1937, and half of the rail roadbed and seven tunnels from the Vanderbilt / Carnegie rail roadbed were acquired. Construction of the first 160 mile segment began in 1938. The first section opened to traffic, in 1940, ran from Middlesex, near Carlisle, to Irwin, near Pittsburgh. This is covered on pages 8 to 52. The 100 mile long Eastern Extension ran from Middlesex, to Valley Forge, some 15 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Pages 53 to 100 are devoted to this Eastern Extension, which was built 1948-1950. The 67 mile long Western Extension, from Irwin around Pittsburgh to the Ohio state line, was built 1949-1951, and is covered on pages 101 to 113. The 33 mile extension from Valley Forge through the northern fringes of Philadelphia to the Delaware River was built in 1952-1954. The Delaware River Extension is treated on 114 to 117. In 1954-1957, the 110 mile long Northeastern Extension from the east-west Turnpike near Valley Forge to Scranton / Wilkes-Barre was built, and is covered on pages 118-123. The remainder of the book covers the tunnel bypasses at Laurel Hill, Sideling Hill, and Ray’s Hill, and the second tunnels built through Blue, Kittatinny, and Tuscarora mountains. This is a book any antique truck or equipment enthusiast will want to have. Equipment pictures includes makers Bucyrus-Erie; Caterpillar; CMI Autograde; Euclid; Insley; Koehring; LeTourneau; Marion; Michigan; Northwest; Ransome; and others.
