Suite of four digital imaging and color accuracy tools showcasing Datacolor's Colorvision technology for photographers and graphic artists… because color matters. Purchased for $475. The box has been opened but the product was never used. When you think about it, it's amazing that color computer prints look anything like the original image on the screen. The screen image is being created by a matrix of tiny red, green and blue splodges, which each emit light of varying brightness depending on the signal from their electron beam or thin film transistor (for CRT and LCD monitors, respectively). The print, in contrast, is made up of at least four inks - cyan, magenta, yellow and black, with lighter versions of some of the colors added for finer control in true "photo quality" printers. The ink doesn't emit any light of its own, of course; all it does is reflect some portion of the light that hits it. There are lots of different color printer types, from domestic inkjets through high-output color lasers to big commercial proofing machines, but all of them lay down some kind of colored substance on the material on which they print, and that colored substance is always fundamentally different in nature to the glowing splotches you were looking at before. To make a screen image look like a print, regardless of what screen and what printer you use, you need color calibration. Somebody, somewhere, needs to empirically measure what each printer and monitor does when it's told to print or display each shade of each color. From those measurements, you can create a "profile" for each device (a widely-used standard for which has been created by the International Color Consortium) that compensates for its oddities. Similarly, profiles can be created for film viewed on a particular lightbox, slide projectors, and so on. The SpectroPRO2Suite package is compatible with most popular image editing tools and printers, putting control of the digital darkroom in the hands of the creator. The bundle includes: The new PatchReader software utility for reading color targets and reducing patch-reading errors with an easy to use color-coded reading interface which makes patch reading a snap with the Spectrocolorimeter, no matter how many times you need to return to it. You can even save partially read targets for later completion! SpectroPRO Spectrocolorimeter, which conveniently measures a range of calibration targets (using ProfilerPRO(TM) software) includes new color targets specially optimized for reading with the bundled spectro and PatchReader software.  The all-new USB Spyder2(TM) colorimeter with the advanced features of Spyder2PRO(TM) software for use on both LCD and CRT displays. ProfilerPRO(TM) v3 printer profile building software, with more accurate matching of saturated vector colors, especially helpful for graphic designers. ProfilerPRO used with the bundled Spectrocolorimeter builds high-quality printer profiles right inside Adobe® Photoshop®. DoctorPRO(TM) software edits profiles using the full Adobe Photoshop global editing toolset for color manipulation. Along with the introduction of the new SpectroPRO2 Suite packaged for professional markets, ColorVision has also introduced the all-new PrintFIX(TM) Suite. This affordable integrated hardware/software solution from monitor calibration to printer profiling is specially developed for mid-market enthusiasts such as home hobbyists, amateur photographers as well as desktop specialists in small business environments.  PhotoCal is the less expensive of the two monitor calibration/profiling packages available from ColorVision ($284) and is compatible with both the PC and Mac platforms. Users of Microsoft Windows 98/98SE/Me, 2000 and XP should find that it runs without problems. The program itself is easy to install and runs via a simple wizard process, much like Adobe Gamma. Each stage is fully explained in the Wizard window and further instructions are provided in the form of a "PDF User Manual". Do make sure the Spyder colorimeter is connected before beginning the process of calibration and profiling. The Spyder colorimeter is the key to making an accurate profile for the monitor. This device is quite compact and "sticks" to the face of the screen using three suction cups. The user should ensure that the surface of the monitor is cleaned before beginning calibration. The LCD version uses a special harness to suspend the Spyder over the face of the display and so avoids the suction cups damaging the surface. The screenshots used below are based on the PC Windows version of PhotoCAL, but the process is virtually identical on the Mac. If there is any difference in operation I have not yet seen it. However, one thing to be careful of, make sure that you have disabled the Adobe Gamma  "Extension" on the Mac or remove Adobe Gamma Loader.Exe from the Windows Startup folder on the PC (use the Explorer search facility to search out instances of this file on Windows 2000 systems). OptiCAL, designed for professionals, is intended to be even more accurate than PhotoCAL. It allows the user to set target values for maximum and minimum luminance, gamma and color temperature. Using such an approach should be possible to match a group of monitors to one standard. I have used OptiCAL on my Mac and PC systems and am extremely happy with the results obtained. Screen to print matches are good. On the downside OptiCAL is a bit more complex to use than PhotoCAL. In addition to setting our own we can choose from a wide range of predefined Targets and Curves, each of which describes the gamma, color temperature, maximum and minimum luminance levels. Just so as we're clear what this means, the contrast control of the monitor determines the white luminance, the brightness control the black luminance and the color controls the color temperature. However, whereas with PhotoCAL these aim points were determined by ColorVision; OptiCAL allows the user to set them to any value they like.
