Artist Statement - Duaa Zaheer - June 2015   The primary step when starting an art project is doing some research and brainstorming. When my teacher first assigned this hard hat project to us, various ideas rushed through my mind. The first concept that came to my mind was feminism. It was a theory I was very interested and passionate about. However, a fair amount of my peers considered taking this approach and I decided to come up with another original idea. At the time, I was learning about the brain in one of my other classes. Thus, I took a more neurological approach to this project. My inspiration came from the two sides of the brain; the right lobe and the left. The left side of the brain portrays logic, analytic thought and the mathematical concepts, while the right side represents intuition, art and creativity. I researched these ideas to figure out how to apply them to my hard hat.   The subject matter of my project was arranged as such; I separated the hat in two parts. These parts represented each side of the brain. To depict what the left side of the brain represented, I decided to draw a blueprint. This illustrated the qualities the left side possessed; mathematics, calculations and logic. I got inspiration from a picture of a blueprint to a house, which I found online. For the right side, however, I portrayed a variety of bright colours and placed buildings along the edge on the hard hat. This represented the aftermath of the blueprint; the final stage of the creative process.   During this project, a variety of media were used. First, I had to sand the entire hat before applying any acrylic paint on the surface. I separated the two sides with tape to create a clean edge down the middle. I used the typical colours shown in blueprints; dark blue and white. I applied these two colours using the corresponding acrylic paint and paintbrushes. I used a thin brush to draw the blueprint designs with the white paint. Next, I used a sponge to apply red, orange and yellow paint to the right side of the helmet. This created a gradient effect, which resembled a sunset. I chose to use orange hues due to the fact that blue and orange are complementary colours. I then used silver duct tape to create the infrastructures around the edge. I thought duct tape was an original and interesting medium and I got inspiration from famous Toronto and Mississauga buildings, representing my community into this assignment. The use of these media enhanced my knowledge on the various methods of applying acrylic paint on different surfaces such as the hard hat.   Neurology has always been a fascinating topic and I've always been interested by the functions of the brain. This fascination and curiosity gave birth to this idea for my hard hat project. The Mike Holmes foundation represents innovation and I sought to portray that in my artwork. However, I believe I could've improved in certain areas and tweaked some parts on the hat. I would've liked to add more details and emphasis on the brain's anatomy and on my buildings. Nonetheless, it was an amazing opportunity to learn about the Mike Holmes foundation and to expand my artistic skills. Next year I will be attending Sheridan's Art Fundamental program which J hope will lead to Animation.
