Artist Statement - Mariam Saifuddin - June 2015   My piece portrays different concepts of construction. While brainstorming I thought of expanding on the idea of construction. I started focusing on the basics such as safety, blueprints and architecture. This led me to my first idea of making a blueprint. I wanted to show how much work is really put into making a blueprint. My second idea was to make a busy neighborhood or city under construction. I wanted to show what construction could mean to a community.   The safety and the basics of construction were the inspirations for my hard hat. My main focus was to have a city under construction. Another main component of my piece was safety and the construction tools.   The shape of the helmet was unlike the flat and sturdy surfaces I usually worked on. Considering the 3d aspect of this helmet I had to focus on how I would plan my idea's because of the round shape of the helmet. I chose to have a blue sky on the top of my helmet to bring together the whole piece while the front, back and sides of the helmet had my construction site going around in detail to even out the simplicity of the sky. When I started painting I focused on having neutral colors because I wanted my work to look as realistic as possible. To add smaller detail's to my piece I decided to use a sharpie for things such as windows, shadows and ropes. To add my final touches to my piece I decided to make dust all around the construction site.   My finished hardhat was different than what I had planned since I could not add as much detail considering the helmet and the dry paint. Overall, my piece represented the idea of construction well because of the way I made my composition revolve around the basics of construction and safety.
