Artist Statement - Rachel Odiko - June 2015     Prior to beginning the design of my hard hat, I first brainstormed ideas in order to come up with the composition.  To help assist my brainstorming, I created a mind map about construction.  In that mind map, I made a list of words and ideas that first came to mind when the word ‘construction’ was mentioned.  Next, I narrowed down my ideas by picking out a few words and ideas from that mind map I personally found interesting. Since I also wanted to incorporate illusions on my hard hat I researched various artists, such as Robert Gonsalves, for inspiration.  One of his art pieces that I really liked was his painting called “The Arboreal Office” which shows the illusion the trees gradually transforming into buildings.   I tried my best to create a strong composition. I did that by incorporating the theme of construction into my work. After a considerable amount of research, I decided that I wanted to create a park scene with trees in the background. However, to be more creative, I attempted to create the illusion of various trees transforming into a building.   The medium that I used for my hard hat was acrylic paint and silver duct tape. I used various colors of acrylic paint to create the sky and also to make the dirt trail surrounding the park on the brim of the hat. I used the tape to make trees and the building. At first, the application of the tape and acrylic paint was not that difficult to use. However, as I progressed, it became challenging to apply both mediums on the 3-D surface. From this experience, I learned the importance of planning out a color scheme before applying the medium and practice using the medium more before hand in order to obtain the best results from my work.   Furthermore, the composition that I created on the hard hat relates to me. I appreciate the beauty of nature and the diversity of beautiful plants. At the same time, I am also interested in the different types of architecture. As a result, I wanted to combine and connect those two aspects together. Overall, with all of the hard work that I put into my artwork, I am very proud of my hard hat’s overall outcome. My post-secondary destination for next year is to go to Sheridan College to obtain a diploma in nursing.
