The experienced hobbyist will love this one! In to spectroscopy? Not happy with the low end response of your probe? Here's a solution; plus a very nice Geiger counter/dosimeter. This is a William B. Johnson Co. GSM-110 rate meter. It was made in 2008, and is both mechanically and electronically flawless. It is spotless, too. Looks almost new, you be the judge. It includes TWO FACTORY PAIRED, FACTORY MANUFACTURED probes. This meter was designed to be used with the W.B. Johnson probe series, and these are the probes. Retail cost of this package is $2,195, and there's a good reason for that. The instruction manual will be provided. It contains information on these specific probes as well. The meter: It is calibrated to University of California standard for use in labs and hospitals. This standard requires that all functions and readings are within 10% of actual rate and dose, rather than the 20% tolerance the NRC mandates. This particular counter has virtually no variance; and is accurate to within 5% of dose and count rates. It was calibrated on 10/30/2014, both probes were certified to be within factory-specified acceptable limits for efficiency. W.B. Johnson has a very simple business philosophy which can be equated to In 'N Out Burger (I don't know the eastern equivalence, sorry folks.) Just a few choices... Three meters, three probes, extremely high quality. Nothing less, nothing more. They color match too, for all of us physicists who need matching towels and shower curtains. The meters have increased in quality and reliability with each generation, and the GSM-110s made from 2005 and on are top notch; this one is 2008. It has reliable surface mounted components. It also has adjustable gain and impedance settings in addition to HV adjustment; so every imaginable probe can be used. The probes: The GLE-1 low energy gamma scintillation probe is absurdly difficult to find probably because people who use them don't ever want to let them go. It has an extremely thin slice of NaI(Tl) behind the beryllium front window, which (especially in the presence of the discriminator circuit) allows it to accurately pick up the lower end of the gamma spectrum. This probe is in perfect shape, not a scratch on it. It retails for over $800 by itself. It can pick up the gamma signature from the Americium 241 in a smoke detector from 10 feet away. This is the ultimate low end probe for detecting scatter and Bremsthralung. While this probe is not needed for detection of a broad gamma spectrum isotope, Iodine 125 will light the scintillator up like the heavily light-adorned nondenominational holiday plant of your choice... I personally have a Chanukah bush, and the lighting setup puts out over 400 lumens. Anyway, the specifications say accurate readings down to 8keV; this is actually a very conservative estimate and on a gamma spectrometer, the probe will give clear peaks down to the lowest possible scatter phenomenon you could fathom. It picks up a 1.5keV peak from a soft X-ray tube clearly above background noise at a 2:1 ratio. I don't have anything that goes lower than 1.5keV available in my home lab, but it isn't hard to imagine how low it can really go. The probe Probe number 2: WBJ GM200. It is the thin window end window probe which will easily detect alpha radiation, all beta, and gamma in the "standard GM" tube range. It's kind of funny, because they color match. Everything is stylish! There are two sets of adjustable probe holders; one on the handle, and one on whichever side you prefer. I have two of these setups, and I keep a DD MagLite attached to the side via the sturdy adjustable probe clips, and it holds. It has never fallen off and makes a huge difference for a grab and go kit! In the other (the one I am selling) I keep the GLE1 probe in the top. If I need it for a quick survey, it's a good probe for that. The GM200 probe next to it allows for instant further analysis with the switch of a BNC plug. No voltage changes are required. It's an all-in-one. If you have questions, please ask. This is the newest WBJ meter on eBay, the best probes, the best looks, best everything. Please message me if you want a link to the manual so you can look it over before you buy. International buyers must contact me prior to purchase, please.
