Artist Statement - Gurpartap Sohal - June 2015   I was very inspired by construction work and some of the very cool and futuristic house on which I have come across over the duration of my life. I really wanted to apply the thoughts that go through an individual's mind every time he or she plans their future. I was also inspired by time it takes for a house to be built as it is a time of anticipation and joy.   I chose to use very soft colour as it eases the mind. The side with the word Dream written on its side, I chose to use a light shade of blue, and implied it as the thought of a new homeowner or daydreamer. On the other side of the helmet is a sunset with the construction of an incomplete house. The incomplete house implies that without the trades all dream structures would be very difficult or impossible to make. I used a sunset to hint that at the end of the day the trades enable one to dream and also fulfill them. As you may observe I added an outlet, which represent the creative input involved to dream and to create.   I chose to use acrylic as it adds more texture and also because upon drying the colors maintain their organic colour, as they don't fade or darken. I found that it was very hard to work with especially due to the spherical shape. I really liked that the paint tends to dry very swiftly making it easier to add layers and detail. I learned that it would be better to use skinny paintbrushes rather than the thicker ones. With the thicker paintbrushes I found that making straight lines was very difficult because they would hold more paint than what was needed.   Mine is very similar to my thought as I believe to every decision one must commit to a great amount of thinking to ensure a safe result and also one which you as an individual are happy with. I also image something similar the structure on the blue aide as my future residence. I am very happy with finished result as it was very close to what I had imagined. I would most definitely add more detail to my helmet to create a polished piece of work. I really enjoyed this project as challenged my painting and drawing skills and also because it enabled me to work with an exotic surface to work on. I plan on taking life sciences in university.
