Artist Statement - Sandra Vo - June 2015   For this Hard Hat project, I was greatly influenced and inspired by Mike Holmes and the aspects of construction in general. I was also inspired by a street art in Toronto and famous Canadian buildings such as the CN Tower and the Marilyn Monroe Twin Towers. As a result, I decided to incorporate those ideas as my main focus. In addition to my Canadian theme of construction, I wanted to include the idea of safety, more specifically the protection of the brain since the medium I was working on was a hard hat.   I designed the hard hat to look like a building made out of bricks with graffiti on it, and wanted it to resemble buildings a person would see walking down the streets of Toronto. I combined all my ideas by Mike Holmes in the front of the helmet in his signature pose. Then, I painted his name across the helmet in capital graffiti letters while incorporating the famous Canadian buildings by substituting the CN Tower as the letter "I" and one of the Marilyn Monroe buildings as the "L". Using the knobs around on the rim of the hat to my advantage I painted four of them too look like construction machines with 3D wheels and the rectangular ones on each side to look like recycling and compost bins, a tool box, and first aid kits. As for the top of the hat, I originally brainstormed it to look like a brain turning into metal and functioning by metal gears and machinery to show that the hard hat is protecting the brain as though it's like your brains' metal armour. However, it was very challenging to get the affect I wanted, so I altered my design to look like a metal top with brains installed into it. To enhance my composition, I incorporated the gears to represent how the brain is constantly.   The medium I chose to design the hard hat included acrylic paint, a glue gun, a sharpie marker al)d electrical tape. I learned the acrylic paint can easily scratch off the smooth plastic surface of the hat. However, with the help of some sand paper which roughened the surface of the hat, I was able to apply the acrylic paint without it chipping off. I used the sharpie to outline the graffiti letters in order to create a 3D effect. I cut out gear shapes from the electrical tape and applied them accordingly to create different layers to my design. I wanted to add more 3D effects to my composition to further enhance my hard hat. In order to do that, I decided to experiment with texture. Carefully using a glue gun, I added some physical, bumpy texture to the bring of the hat to look as though there is dirt surrounding the brick building.   My ideas relate to me because they were inspired through my taste of pop culture. My favourite type of art is street art and I admire Canadian culture and its’ famous buildings. I love the idea of constructing and building, yet in an eco-friendly way. Overall, I enjoyed this project and feel that it was very successful in portraying my perspective of construction as a whole and what I see when I look at a hard hat. Next year, I will be attending Sheridan's Animal Care program, which I hope will lead me to my next steps in becoming a veterinarian.
