Artist Statement - Samyea Alam - June 2015   Using acrylic paint, wiring and ink, I combined my strongest skills to create this piece. I incorporated different architectural buildings as well as a blueprint I designed to relate to my post-secondary destination; interior designing and architecture. Wire is a medium I have learned to love and is still a skill I am developing. I felt the hard hat alone was missing an important part, the piece was pretty to look at alone but the purpose if it is the be worn and used for protection, so the idea of a wired sculpture of a head came into place.   Originally, I planned to draw interior spaces being newly renovated, but while working on the piece, my ideas were constantly developing to meet my satisfaction. While in the process of thinking, I kept two artists in mind; Penny Harder’s Bolt and Nut sculptures, keeping Hardy’s techniques of using raw material to capture different figures. As well as Kerby Rosanne’s Sharpie art which inspired me to draw the sketch like sharpie art. Additionally, I wanted to incorporate the blueprint of a small house. I felt the hard hat was missing something to tie the pieces together, so the blueprint was definitely a nice piece to add. Overall, the piece turned out beautiful and did incorporate a bit of who I am.   I used a combination of ink and acrylic paint to create the blueprint. I started by using several layers of blue mixed with white to give the effect of it fading away. I originally left a white gap between the blue and the grey paint, after stepping back to observe my work, I realized the white strip was distracting. I extended the blue to meet the grey. Then using white acrylic paint, I painted the blueprint design and used black ink to highlight the small features. I used a black sharpie to sketch the outlines of the images on the sides of the hard hat. I did not focus on how accurate the drawings were, instead, I tried to give the drawing more of a rough feeling. I later glue-gunned a variety of bolts and nuts to finish the piece.   While creating my piece, I kept my post-secondary destination in mind. I know what ever career I decided to explore, it would incorporate some for of artistic aspect in it. Interior designing gives me the ability to design a working space, while adding my artistic ability into decorating. This work, the hard hat, gave me a chance to show my artistic skills. I will be a student at Sheridan College, Faculty of Art and Design in Oakville, Ontario staring of September 2015 for the Bachelors of Interior Design Pram, I put a lot of effort in the arts throughout high school and each piece I create brings me closer to my post-secondary destination.
