Artist Statement - Ayinkaran Ravindran - June 2015   My creative process for the helmet was rather scatter brained. I new from the beginning that I wanted to use a skyline though I thought there would be too much leftover space on top. I first started with the basic idea of showing urban sprawl so I wanted to do a Kim Moody inspired design by collaging architectural buildings across the helmet but realized it wouldn't have been completed with the allotted time. I then thought to do the ink transfer across the helmet using a design of different historical pictures of architecture being built but thought that the way it would be applied would be too messy. So I ended up deciding to do a design of a city skyline. I then further thought that I should utilize the style of constellations in a night sky to enhance the complexity of my work.   The essential idea or composition is the strongest point of my piece. I have a skyline of a bustling city in the night as that is the time when we truly see a busy city. I used the lights of the city to help emphasize the density of the city. The night setting also helps show another important part of my composition, which is the night sky. This was important as it added further complexity to my piece as I used stars to make a constellation to show another design, that design being a floor plan. This feature adds detail to help complete my piece.   The background for the helmet was done using a wash of acrylic paint for the background. The bending of blue for the background was to show the soft night sky. The skyline was done using a sharpie to make solid dark silhouettes. In the future though I feel that I should incorporate more obvious landmarks of Canada as that is the main location. I also feel in the future that I should add gloss medium to my white lights in the city so that it will have some shine to it.   My idea relates to me as the city as the nightlife of a city shows truly how busy humans are. The nightlife is something I'm a part of myself so I see a lot how lively a city can get at night. I feel that the success was more in the idea and though process. Overall, I feel that the final piece can use improvements but the solid idea and concept for the composition help bring the piece together. My plans for post-secondary is to go to art fundamentals to further enhance my art skills. I then plan to go into game design.
