Artist Statement - Pavandeep Sidhu - June 2015 For the hard hat project, while brainstorming I began to look at the safety hazards associated with construction as well as tools. However, with further research I decided to take on a different approach on the hat, while still relating to the idea of construction so I decided on the theme of the SOS Children's Village. Through research, I was able to discover that this organization is sponsored by Mike Holmes, and is an organization that provides children with homes to meet their basic needs. I also noticed that many of the articles relating to the SOS Children's Villages had to do with these four main things: food, healthcare, education and the homes. So, I decided to add these important ideas to my piece. I also added tools and words around the hat to further strengthen my piece, importance of tools, which allow the creation of homes and buildings. The unique shape of the hat, although challenging to work with allowed my ideas to really be expressed. I arranged the four main ideas corresponding to the SOS Children's Village around the hat and also decided to include the world map with the locations of the organization at the very front of the hat. I chose this location of the hat, because I felt that it was the part of the hat that is first seen, and the first impression I wanted to put was how the different locations of the SOS Children's Village and the positive impact of this international organization. I also included words across the hat around areas which were narrow and easily followed across the hat such as the rim of hat. The media used on the hat to create the design was acrylic paint, however the hat first required sanding. I applied the media using a stippling technique in order to add more texture to the hat. I applied the medium through any layers, in order to make the piece look more interesting. I was able to blend many different colours on the hat, rather than just using one solid colour to make certain areas pop. Something I learned was that the stippling technique is a great technique when working with acrylic paints, as it allows the different layers of paint to blend well, whereas if I were to just paint it, the brush strokes would be visible and that was something I want ed to minimize. The idea and theme of the SOS Children's Village can relate to me because in the future I also want to work with children, and it was a topic that instantly caught my attention once I saw it. I also love participating in charity events, such as food banks. Overall, I am very proud of the final piece and really liked the final outcome of the hat, and through this project I was able to learn how to work with 3-D objects. Next year, for post-secondary I wish to attend the University of York to learn how to teach elementary school.
