Artist Statement - Aaliya Mohammed - June 2015 When it comes to the thought process of my hard hat I had a lot in mind. I wanted to incorporate as much as possible into this art piece and my main goal was to display and stick to things that represent Mike Holmes. I watched a few episodes of his show Holmes on Holmes featured on the HGTV network, and got a feel as to what he and the work he does is about. One thing that grabbed my attention was that throughout many, if not all, of his episodes he wore overalls which is unique because not many other construction workers that are known do this. This is what I believe distinguishes Mike Holmes from the rest. I decided to make my main focal point on my hard had a pair of overalls. Everything else added onto the hat either complemented the overalls, or dealt with the whole construction theme for instance, my gears. I combined my subject matter into a creative piece, which I hope will be eye catching. I focused on bright colors and placed the overalls over the hat, which made it the main focal point. I tried to be neat as possible and paid attention to detail. This is what I have done with my subject matter when trying to create a strong composition. When working on my composition I loved the idea of working and building up my layers because I felt like just using one medium wouldn't be as creative as adding things onto the hard hat itself. With doing this, it made everything stand out more considering the fact that it made a bigger statement and is more noticeable. My overalls and a lot of the details displayed on it are all layered. For instance the belt and buttons on the overalls itself. I have learnt that construction on the whole is a very complex topic. I used to believe that all it was really about was building things and tools. But with these hats, I've seen topics that were brought up for instance poverty which I never thought was ever so related to construction but now I have a whole new look on the construction field itself. The idea of sewing overalls together relates to me because I love fashion and anything that relates to it. When completing this, it reminded me of playing with my Barbie dolls as a child. I enjoyed dressing them up with many different outfits and the overalls reminded me of one specific outfit my doll used to own. Overall, I am pleased with the work I have done and I believe that my artwork was done to the best of my ability.
