Artist Statement - Ethan Parkes - June 2015   The inception of my hard hat stemmed from multiple ideas; beginning with Greek architecture and playing with the idea of sun dials; I couldn't come up with a strong concept that would translate easily to the circular smooth surface, so I abandoned the idea and brainstormed some others instead, starting with the list of possible topics or themes for our hard hats. The ones that caught my eye were the themes of Nixon watches and blueprints, so I incorporated those ideas into my hard hat, along with a brain on the outer surface representing what the hard hat is protecting. I combined these themes to attempt to create a blueprint of a mechanical brain constricted by the ring of a watch, or "constricted by time".   The brain has two sides, the left and the right which both represent different concepts or thought processes. I tried to represent this by making slight stylistic changes to the way I use the medium (paint and marker) to express both sides. I also attempted to use the protrusions of the hard hat to help express the idea of the ring of a watch and its buttons. The entire hat was painted in a mix of blue and gel medium to help show the idea of a blueprint; the brain was drawn on to the base of the sanded hard hat first, then painted over to help give it the illusion of a blueprint without drawing or painting over the blue paint.   I'm not sure how successful I was at translating my ideas into reality, but I believe It could have been much stronger if I had prepared more for it and had prior experiences with similar media. I think my ideas and concepts were strong but the execution was on the weaker side. My biggest learning experience from this project is to practice using the medium in my sketchbook to build up my skills.   This project isn't particularly ideal for my preferred art style as I feel I'm much more successful with graphite and flat surfaces over paint and three-dimensional surfaces. But this project was an interesting way to open our minds to different forms of art and a different way of thinking, because you're not only creating an image to be seen from one direction or in one way, you're creating a three dimensional image on a strange surface which requires more thinking and preparation than perhaps something like a realistic portrait of someone. Overall, I enjoyed the way this project had expressed concepts into creating art, but it isn't a project I'd voluntarily repeat due to my lack of experience and interest in paint. I am undecided about what I would like to pursue in post-secondary, though I hope it will be focused around music.
